Football's Elusive Red Zone

UrlAlthough FOX and CBS have secured rights to NFL coverage until 2011, DirectTV's NFL Sunday Ticket package offers an alternative way to watch football. DirectTV's Red Zone Channel (RZC) switches between games every two to five minutes, focusing on key scoring opportunities, in an attempt to capture the excitement of watching the game live.

What sounds like a great idea in theory makes for a surprisingly unsatisfying experience in practice. RZC effectively takes control out of the viewer's hands. It's like watching TV while a compulsive channel-surfer commands the remote.

Unless you're heavily into fantasy football, the networks are still your best bet. Here's why.

Jack Meyers Media Village: Why You Should Be Watching Six Degrees

Six Degrees Creator Tells Why Viewers Need To Keep Their Eyes on the Screen

03_logo_mvlogo_3 By Jacki Garfinkel

"One of the original six may not be around forever," said Six Degree creator Stuart Zicherman.

Six degrees. It's a cool notion "that anyone on the planet can be connected to any other person through a chain of six people, which means that no one is a stranger... for long" (ABC's Six Degrees site). So why is this fun separation hypothesis not raking in the viewers?

Six Degrees has been losing one half of the audience of its lead-in Grey's Anatomy, with a significant tune out time of 10:30 p.m, aka halfway through the show.

Top Chef 2: The Waiting Game

Tc2_3 Only 13 cooks left on Top Chef. In addition to being an unlucky number, 13 is still just too many people to care about. So, rather than repeat my review from the previous two weeks, I’ve decided to do something different until the competition gets down to ten chefs, or until the remaining contestants become interesting enough to differentiate, whichever comes first. This week, we’re going to play a game that I'm calling "Match the Shadowy Competitor with His or Her Inexplicable Dish."

Lost: So It's Treason, Is It?

258cdccf7a4d4cb9ac8a3450d9a3f120 Let’s cut to the chase: Eko’s dead -- killed by the mechanical-sounding black smoke creature. This episode of Lost, however, was so jam-packed with goodies that Eko’s death didn’t even rate top billing.

Things are getting even more interesting at Chez Others. Jack might get to be a key player in a little coup to take down their fearless leader, Ben. All Jack has to do is botch the surgery on Ben’s tumor (according to the lovely Juliet). But is this just another one of the Others’ mind games? These nuts are hiding behind so many layers of truth and non-truth, it’s like trying to peel a centerless onion. And, like that onion, we'll have frustration and tears before it's all done.

America's Next Top Model: What is this Meaningless Drivel?

Banks2_1

Billed as a show that would retrace the steps of the seven remaining models, this week’s episode instead delivered a steaming pile of boring silliness. The latest installment of America’s Next Top Model offered zero drama, zero nail-biting goodness, and zero evictions. Behold, the dreaded recap!

Dancing with the Stars: Week 8 Elimination Results

Coleman_07_240x360Not surprisingly, Wednesday night’s Dancing with the Stars results show threw in the usual hour and almost-a-half of extra entertainment intended to further the suspense and keep the audience guessing who would be eliminated: a performance by the Italian group Il Divo; a gravity-defying dance of swop (swing and hip-hop); and finally, Willa Ford.
