Fall Season Report Card: Heroes Hot, Grey's Not So Much

Hiro Now that we’re a few weeks into the fall TV season, it’s high time to take a step back and see whether a few popular shows are living up to expectations. Here’s a healthy dose of honest criticism for four favorite series.

Heroes. This show surprised everyone. Yes, it’s a cheesy, unoriginal concept -- regular people get superpowers through crazy modern science. Still, Heroes nails its tone perfectly. It doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s a comic book. No logic, no physics -- just one fun, escapist hour every week. Good vs. evil. Luke vs. Vader. Michael J. Fox vs. Rush Limbaugh. It’s a guilty pleasure you don’t have to feel guilty about. Grade: A

GMMR: How I Met Your Mother Recap -- “Crazy Eyes”

Gmmr_logo_7

This is without a doubt the best episode of How I Met Your Mother this year. Things are starting to feel totally right with everyone in the show. It started out somewhat slow, and I was not too impressed with the first two or three minutes, but, then, it happened.

Totally Frakked: Heroes - "YouTube is Free, You Idiot!"

Heroes_haasethsdas Niki's superkid Micah can control technology with his mind, and that means things are looking up on Heroes. At least, things would be looking up, if the entire show were as exciting as its opening sequence, in which Micah and DL meet Hiro and his pal Ando at a traffic accident outside Vegas. Using their powers of phasing and time-stopping, respectively, DL and Hiro rescue a couple from a burning car. This is awesome! Right off the bat, we've got some serious action that displays the show's greatest strength: cool characters working together and playing off each other.

Sadly, it's all downhill from there. Family squabbling and psychic coppitude drag the show back into a boring quagmire.

Desperate Housewives: Supermarket Sweep

1_11After meddling Carolyn Bigsby planted yet another seed of doubt in Bree Hodge’s mind last week on Desperate Housewives , Bree had been seriously questioning new hubby Orson’s many mysteries. Of course, when Bree confronts her betrothed about his alleged past abusiveness, he says, “Darling, I could never strike a woman. You believe me, don’t you?” When you use the word “darling,” how could you possibly be a wife beater? Bree is still a bit shaken, though, so to exact revenge, she spills a secret to Carolyn.

SmackDown Sideshows

24_432The majority of any given WWE broadcast is given over to the hyping of a main event, typically a pay-per-view affair involving longtime villain King Booker, the slightly generic Batista, or the bulky Big Show. The real wrestling entertainment nuggets are buried deep within the two hours of Friday Night SmackDown! and WWE Monday Night Raw. Somewhere around the 90-minute mark, we're treated to over-the-top performances and amusingly absurd rivalries that recall such memorable personalities of yesteryear as Adorable Adrian Adonis and Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake. Take the Boogeyman, for instance...

Totally Frakked: Battlestar Galactica - Deep Inside a Cylon's Mind

Bstar0306mod1 This week on Battlestar Galactica, it's all Cylons, all the time: Cylons explaining their views of the world, Cylons getting a mysterious virus that makes them die barfing, Cylons having arguments about the future of their race, and Cylons being bitchy to poor Gaius Baltar in his bathrobe.

This is dangerous territory. When show creators Ron Moore and David Eick decided to take the plot of BSG deep inside the Cylon Base Ships, they ran the risk of revealing too much, thus making the scary enemy too familiar to be creepy. Worse, the Cylon could come off looking just plain cheesy. This was the first episode of the season where unintended cheese reared its milky head, and it wasn't pretty.
